A piece of Chanel's costume jewellery at its most theatrical. The pendant is built as a Byzantine cross: five hand-poured glass cabochons in peach, sapphire blue, smoke grey, amber and a deep raspberry centre, each bezel-set in gold-tone metal, with four baroque teardrop pearls radiating from the cardinal points. The interlocking CC sits on the centre stone. It hangs from a heavy twisted rope chain.

The glass is the reason these are collected. Poured glass jewellery was first made by the Parisian glassmaker Augustine Gripoix in the late 1800s, the technique involving molten glass poured into shapes that imitated real gemstones and pearls, and Coco Chanel made it iconic by reinterpreting Byzantine jewellery with it. Each stone is poured by hand, so the depth of colour and the tiny internal variations are unique to this piece — no two are identical, and it's the quality that separates couture-level costume jewellery from everything that followed.

The vintage Chanel most collected today comes from the 1980s and 90s, when pieces debuted on the runway on Lagerfeld's original supermodels. This is that era.
