Sterling Silver Dice Pill Box with Star Set Lapis Lazuli, 5 cm

A die the size of your palm, in solid sterling silver, with every pip set as a lapis lazuli cabochon in a six-pointed star.

The star setting is borrowed from Georgian and Victorian practice, where a stone was sunk into the metal and rays cut outward from it so the surround became part of the ornament. Here it turns a familiar object into something worth leaving out on a desk. The silver is finished two ways — a soft matte across the faces, polished along the rounded edges — so the box catches light differently depending on how it is set down. Inside, a gilt interior.

The lid slides rather than hinges, closing flush so the cube reads as solid.
